School Dogs Course
This course is designed to provide school staff, leadership teams, and education professionals with the knowledge and skills to safely and ethically integrate dogs into educational settings. It aims to enhance the understanding of the various benefits, risks, and responsibilities associated with having a school dog, drawing from evidence-based research and UK-specific legislation. The course is intended for headteachers, senior leaders, SENCOs, pastoral staff, dog handlers, and other educational professionals who wish to improve children’s well-being through the use of school dogs. No prior experience with animals is necessary, as the course is aimed at anyone interested in using this innovative approach in schools.
The course covers a range of key topics, starting with an introduction to the benefits of school dogs and an overview of evidence-based research on their impact. It then delves into legal and ethical considerations, addressing UK laws and the responsibilities of schools, as well as the ethical concerns surrounding the integration of animals. Further, the course provides guidance on assessing dog welfare, including breed and temperament suitability, recognising stress signals, and ensuring their emotional and physical well-being. Participants will learn about conducting risk assessments, implementing effective health and hygiene practices, and integrating school dogs into their setting without overburdening them. Training and certification for school dogs, as well as staff development, are also covered, alongside advanced considerations like managing challenges, liability concerns, and creating a unified school strategy. The course ultimately aims to equip schools with the tools to responsibly and effectively implement school dog programmes that benefit students and staff alike.
